Questions To Ask Your Family Dentist During The Next Appointment

One of the nice things about taking your kids to a family dentist is that these dentists usually take a preventative approach to dental care. They watch how your child's teeth develop over the years, and they are happy to recommend services and lifestyle changes that can keep those teeth healthy. A good way to get even more out of your family dentist visits is to ask questions. Here are some questions to ask during your next appointment.

1. How well is your child cleaning their teeth?

Ask your dentist (or maybe even the hygienist) how well your child is cleaning their teeth. The dentist should be able to assess the amount of tartar on your child's teeth and the condition of their gums and let you know whether your child is brushing as thoroughly as they should. The dentist might tell you that your child needs to spend more time on their top teeth, or that they are not brushing their molars as well as they should. You can use this feedback to help guide your child as they brush their teeth, going forward. All in all, this will make them a better tooth brusher and keep their teeth healthier as they continue to grow up.

2. Are the foods and drinks you're choosing good ones?

Tell the dentist a little about the snacks and beverages you and your kids enjoy on a regular basis. Ask if those are a good choice for dental health. Your dentist can give you some insight and maybe make some recommendations for dietary changes that may be even better for your dental health. They might also give you some advice for minimizing the impact that not-as-healthy treats have on your child's teeth. For instance, they might say "make sure they drink a few sips of water after eating that!"

3. What preventative care treatments will be helpful in the coming years?

Ask what services your child might benefit from in the coming years. For example, can you expect your child to need sealants two years down the road? Maybe your dentist thinks they might need braces when they are a teen. Asking this question allows you to better plan for the future, both financially and emotionally.

Asking questions is always a smart way to get more out of a dental appointment, especially when that appointment is with a family dentist. Your dentist will be happy to give you as much information as you need to care for your child's teeth appropriately.
